How To Choose Floral Containers For Your Flower Arrangement

Submitted by Liztiany Zakaria
Flowers can add a touch of beauty, peacefulness, and elegance to almost any room or any occasion.

While flowers are very beautiful, most of the time you are going to need some type of floral container for your flowers.
If you want your flower arrangement to look its’ best, then it is very important that you pick out the right container for your arrangement.
Of course there are quite a few things that have to be taken into consideration when picking out floral containers for a specific flower arrangement.

Where Will the Arrangement Be Located?

One of the first things that you need to consider is where your flower arrangement is going to be located at.

Will it be an elegant table arrangement in your dining room for a dinner party, a whimsical bouquet in your country style bathroom, or even an arrangement that is out on your back patio.
The location of your arrangement is going to definitely have an impact on the type of floral container that you consider.
For instance, if you are going to have a fairly large arrangement for outdoors, an urn may be a great choice.

Or, for the elegant dinner party, an elegant vase will be a great choice.

Consider the Size

The size is also another important consideration when choosing the perfect container for your flowers.
A larger arrangement is going to look out of place in a small vase. Large arrangements are usually best for large bowls, baskets or urns.
Smaller arrangements usually go best in small vases or whimsical metal containers.

Considering Color is Crucial

When choosing floral containers for your flower arrangements, considering the color of the flowers is also crucial.

You want to pick out a container that compliments the color of your flowers, and you want the flowers to compliment the container as well.
Often for very vibrant arrangements that are full of many colors, a simple container, such as a basket or a clear glass vase is a great choice.
Monochromatic arrangements often will look good in a vibrant ceramic vase of contrasting or complimentary colors.

If you are considering of using a metal container, you will want to be sure that the colors of the arrangement go well with the shiny metal as well.

Creativity Counts

In some cases, you may want to pick out some floral containers that will allow you to get creative.

In this instance, using terra cotta pots or grape vines is a great idea. With terra cotta pots you can actually make your own designs by stenciling and coloring the pots.
Grape vines also allow you to get creative, making wreath flower arrangements or other types of hanging flower arrangements.

If you like to let your creative side run wild, then these are great containers to use.
Matching a beautiful flower arrangement with the right flower container is almost an art; however, it is relatively easy to do.

Just keep your eyes on the size and color of the arrangement, consider where you want it to go, and then let your creative side have free reign.
No doubt you will pick out lovely complimentary floral containers that will make your arrangements look beautiful in any room.

Ikebana Flower Arrangements

Submitted by Aura Angheliu
First of all, ikebana is an art, the Japanese art of making floral arrangements. Ikebana means “making the flower live in water” and also “revitalizing the plants” and the entire nature, changing the only decorating aspect of the floral arrangements. What’s more important than the esthetic line is carrying into effect philosophical and abstract ideas of life and nature as the divine creation. Each ikebana flower arrangement is a specific world, a point of nature just by means of naturalness, simplicity and purity. It’s the harmony of vases, stems, leaves, branches and flowers. One single branch arranged in a specific ikebana container could be a Japanese floral arrangement. In this art are preferred the buds in stead of full-blown flowers, the winding stems in stead of right ones, asymmetry for symmetry, quality for quantity of flowers.

Tatebana – the first Japanese style that could be called ikebana

The first oriental floral arrangement was made in Tatebana (vertical flower) style, of which main characteristic was the presence of Shin, meaning the communion of spirit, will and justness. There came the other ikebana styles: Rikka, Nageire, Seika, Moribana, Heika and Jiyubana.

Ikebena lines

Ikebana floral arrangement is the recreation of nature in miniature, in which more important is linear construction than the color and quantity, asymmetry, putting into just the flowers of the season and the triangle heaven – man – earth.

Creating ikebana flower arrangement

To create ikebana flower arrangement, follow the next diagram. The tallest vegetal element is Shin (it’s symbolizing the heaven) and is one and a half the vase dimension and can be put in a variable angle from the vertical position. Then comes Soe (the man) and it’s ¾ from the length of Shin, disposed lateral- left from Shin. The last vegetal element is Hikae (the earth) and it’s ¾ from the length of Soe. It has to be arranged, opposing the medium element, in front of both vegetal materials. This is the main positions of ikebana flower arrangement, but is just a diagram that can be completed with other vegetal accessories.

How-to Create Flower Arrangements

Submitted by Kathy Case
Cut flowers are a wonderful way to bring the beauty indoors. As well as making nice bouquets of flowers, they smell good too. There are several flower bulbs that make very nice vases of flowers. Some examples include but are not limited to irises, gladiola, lilies, and daffodils. Flower arrangements make delightful bouquets for the office or for special occasions, such as baby showers or dinner parties. People love to treat their eyes to the sight of beautiful flowers, and anybody can create a nice flower arrangement.

To start you will need a vase half full with water and a pair of scissors. Then head out to the flower patch. When cutting the stems on flower bulbs, be sure to cut the stem at an angle. Also, the longer the stems are, the longer the blooms will last. One other thing to keep in mind while making cut flower arrangements is the colors of the flowers. Some colors can drastically change the affect of a flower arrangement.
For an arrangement that will be placed in front of a wall and viewed from three sides follow these easy steps.

1. Cut any leaves off that will be in the water if left. This will help keep the water from getting scummy.

2. Start by placing the tallest cut flowers in the vase first, facing the blooms toward you in a fan like position. They will be to the back of the bouquet.

3. Then in front and to the sides of the tallest flowers begin to place the next tallest flowers in the vase. The blooms in the center of the flower arrangement should be facing towards you. The blooms to the right side should be turned slightly to the right. Likewise, the blooms to the left side should be turned slightly to the left.

4. Continue in this fashion until you finish placing all but the shortest flowers in the arrangement.

5. Personally, I always place the shortest flowers close to the top rim or slightly above the vase rim. It seems to fill in and finish the flower arrangement.

If you find that flower arrangement is top heavy, just get a larger vase that holds enough water to support the weight of the flowers. To create a vase of flowers that will be a viewed from all sides is a little different from the above procedure. It works much better if the stems are about the same size. Also it will help if the vase opening is only slightly larger than all of the stems put together.

1. Start by placing the tallest cut flowers in the vase first, facing the blooms outward in all directions. They will be in the center of the flower arrangement.

2. Then all the way around the vase place the next tallest flowers until completed.

If the cut flowers that you have selected lack leaves and the flower arrangement looks a bit stemy, just add some. Just about any leafy plant will work. For example, you can easily add a couple leafy cutting from a bush. Just trim the leaves that will be in the water off.

Making a flower arrangement is that simple. Have fun, be creative, and enjoy the wonderful aroma.
