Thanksgiving Flower Arrangements

Submitted by Stephanie Smith
While your own personality will ultimately determine what will go into your Thanksgiving flower arrangement, we’ve pulled together some ideas from getting started to applying the finishing touches.

Thanksgiving is a traditional autumn holiday with a rustic, earthy theme and your flower arrangement can easily incorporate this by the colours and materials you choose. Autumn is the season of deep, warm colours reminding us of ripe fruits and vegetables, and of the leaves turning on the trees before falling. For your main items choose flowers and accessories in a variety of reds, oranges, yellows, coppers and browns. A touch of green or blue is a great complement and will bring out the warm colours beautifully!

Great seasonal flowers are chrysanthemums, asters, pansies and even sunflowers. Mums and asters can be used in medium to large arrangements, possibly with a handful of small roses and stalks of wheat or barley as accents. If you have a garden, take a stroll through it to see what is still thriving – it could end up being the main attraction in your arrangement!

If you want a handful of smaller arrangements, pansies in old mason jars can add a bit of freshness throughout your home, whether they are placed in washrooms to greet guests, or scattered among buffet dishes on the dining room table. To dress them up, simply tie some ribbon around the jar, preferably ribbon with wire edges that can be shaped to your liking.

Once you’ve determined which flowers you want to use, you can figure out what container you’re going to arrange them in. Possibilities include vases of varying sizes, mason jars, water pitchers, metal watering cans, and terra cotta pots (with a smaller vase or glass inside to hold the flowers and water).

Once your arrangement is created, don’t forget to tie all of your colours together with some richly coloured ribbon, raffia, or decorative stones.

Have fun creating your flower arrangement! There are no right or wrong ways as long as you let your creativity show. You’ll know when the arrangement feels and looks right so follow your instinct and have a great Thanksgiving!

DIY Wedding Centerpieces – The Personal Touch For Your Wedding Decoration

Submitted by Chris Lexau
So how do you find the perfect DIY centerpiece? First of all you have to determine the style of your wedding decoration: is it modern? Elegant? Minimalistic? Exuberant? What are your wedding colours? An easy way to get yourself inspired is browsing sites like The Knot or bridal magazines, see what you like and then adapt the style. Try to think outside the box, visit your local dollar store and see what they have got that could work for you. Here are some ideas:

For a spring wedding get simple rectangular or square glass bowls (or any similar container with a colour that pairs well with fresh green), fill them with soil from a garden-store and sow wheat grass or something similar. Once it has grown, you have a wonderful base for any kind of spring decoration: single flowers in bright colors, eggs, little toy animals… The possibilities are endless!

For a beach wedding get clear glass bowls, fill with sand or pebbles, add sea shells from a dollar store (or your last beach holiday) and add a big pillar candle as a center. Compliment with smaller candles in clear glass candle holders (you can get very inexpensive ones at Amazon or at dollar stores).

For an oriental type of decoration spray-paint plain branches in white or bright red. Fold some origami birds and add. Compliment with matching paper lanterns and use the wedding favors (chop sticks, fans, Chinese style little money pouches) as part of the decoration.

For a fall wedding use what nature has to offer: pumpkins in different sizes (you can get baby sized ones at the farmers market or in garden centers), sunflowers, leaves in bright colors (use artificial ones if you don´t feel like hiking through the woods the day before your wedding).

If you have your heart set on floral center pieces but don’t want the hassle of nursing fresh flowers up to the day of your wedding go for artificial ones. They are easier to manage and your can prepare them well in advance. If you decide on fresh flowers, enlist the help of friends and get them in bulk for wholesale prices or at a farmers market.

You see there is a plethora of possibilities when it comes to designing your diy wedding centerpieces. Just start well ahead of time to gather ideas and to get supplies.

Choosing Fall Wedding Flowers That Are In Season Can Save Money

Fall is the season for changing colors, from the bright greens and pastels of summer, to beautiful deep reds, golds and greens of fall. Along with changing textures in the foliage of the trees and cool autumn breezes, come many beautiful fall weddings and lives joining. Fall seems to be one of the most popular times of the year for weddings, and can be accentuated by the natural backdrops and flowers that are in season for fall. While flowers of all varieties can be shipped from overseas all year long it can be very expensive. To help save your budget, educate yourself on what flowers are in season for fall. There are so many options for flowers to decorate your wedding and reception that are available year round and others that are in season for fall, including flowers and plants. It doesn’t matter if you are using a florist or tending to the flower arrangements yourself, knowing what is in season is the key to saving money!Fall arrangements have abundant of colors and can consist of a varieties of flowers that are in season. A few on my favorites that can save some money are Sunflowers, Gerber Daisies, Mums, Black-eye Susans, Chrysanthemums, Dahlia, and Gladiolas. Several of these flowers have larger stems and blooms, and could be used as a single stemmed bouquet to save money, but not take away from the look. Sunflowers and Gerber Daisies are two of my favorite flowers to use in fall weddings and can set the stage for a beautiful ceremony, without spending big bucks on flowers. They can be used in single stems or throughout a bouquet. Another beautiful inexpensive option for fall wedding flowers are mums which could be used in bouquets or as potted plants scattered around your reception or throughout your wedding venue. They are available in several deep color tones including red, gold and green. To save your budget, if you would like to lighten up the look of the deeper fall colors, you can add a few lighter colored flowers throughout your arrangements without forgoing your budget. Depending on the region where you are getting married, your flower choices may vary. Do your research first to help save money but still achieve the look you are going for. Some of the flowers that are available year round include Roses, Carnations, Eucalyptus, Gardenia, Gladiolus, Heather, Lily of the Valley, Orchids, Portea, Scabiosa, and Delphinium along with the Calla Lily. However, if you are on a tight budget, you may want to choose something other than lilies, because they are more expensive than some other choices. You have several options for filler flowers and foliage with the changing of the leaves in the fall. Magnolia leaves, maple tree leaves and others are some great ideas for using to fill a natural arrangement or to use as a center piece of a table. I have seen stems of pepper plants used during fall and it seems to be a great addition of color. Don’t forget the pumpkins and gourds in fall. You could use white pumpkins, green ones or the traditional orange pumpkins as accent pieces. I have found that using the colored leaves along with pillar candles in the center of tables, along with some pretty ribbon, makes a real show stopping center piece. You could also mingle in the gourds or pumpkins for some added color and texture on the tables. The changing of the seasons, from the hot summer months to the cool fall weather, with the beautiful changing colors in the trees and deep colored flowers, is one of my favorite times of the year. It seems to also be a great time to get married. Though many times flowers are one of the biggest expenses of a wedding, they don’t have to be if you take note as to what flowers are in season and plan your color scheme around them. Be creative and save your money!

Fake Flower Arrangements

Submitted by Ian Pennington
Fake flowers and fake flower arrangements go back in history as far as the ancient Chinese, who fashioned them from silk and other cloth. The Egyptians used stained horns and the Italians created them using dyed silkworm cocoons. By the 14th century the French seem to have perfected the creation of fake flowers. But the French Revolution caused those artisans to flee to England. By the early 1800′s immigrants from England brought the trade to America.

The Victorian era fake flowers were fashioned from velvet, calico, muslin, cambric, crepe and gauze. These flowers were used to adorn clothing, whether it be gowns, hats or other accessories. Wood, porcelain and metal was also used. Wax flowers and those fashioned from human hair became popular. Celluloid flowers were introduced in the 1940′s but because of their flammable properties were banned from import from Japan. Plastic soon became the material of choice, then polyester because of its low cost and durability. The higher end, more realistic fake flowers were make from silk, rayon and cotton. Some creators of fake flowers were known to dissect real flowers petal by petal, so to replicate one as accurately and perfectly as possible.

The more creative crafter would fashion fake flowers from shells, feathers, pods, seeds, paper or even ribbon. No matter what is used to create fake flowers they are were and are used to decorate clothing, accessories for the home. In May of 1960 Gimbles in New York City were selling fake flower arrangements for a mere $3.95, as well as, an expert to demonstrate how to create such arrangements.

There is no doubt that flowers, fake or the real thing bring a nice touch to any room. They don’t need to be used in just vases, but in wreaths, swags, tree and much, much more. Any container will do for an arrangement. They will never replace a fresh arrangement but a fake flower arrangements without a doubt a much more affordable and practical alternative. This kind of flowers doesn’t need to be kept to the season but fake flowers such as sunflowers or tulips can brighten a winter’s day.

The size, color and style of the flowers chosen can enhance any decor from contemporary to French country. With manufacturers perfecting flowers in every variety and hue that even a bride on a tight budget is able to have beautiful fake arrangements that add that special touch to any wedding.

More and more we are seeing the use of fake flowers arrangements outside the home. Gardeners, green or brown thumbed, are taking advantage of this alternative. With all the craft, hobby and discount stores around there is a wide variety to chose from as well to fit any budget. With fake flowers it is easy to spruce up the porch and patios. There is no longer the excuse of allergies to use flowers to decorate your home.

Summer Flower Arrangements

Submitted by Ken Marlborough
Summer is a busy time for the gardener and flower arranger. There are so many blooms out there that are just ripe for the picking and are screaming to be arranged. Flowers reflect the freshness and warmth of summer and it always nice to have a flower arrangement at home. Certain flowers only bloom in the summer and it is best to feature them in your summer flower arrangements.

Here is a list of summer flowers that you can use for your flower arrangements:

- Sunflower. Representing the brightness of the summer season, sunflowers are considered the primary summer flowers. These big, eye-catching, and vibrant flowers only bloom completely during the summer. They are great for big and elaborate arrangements.

- Aster. Aster attracts bright and colorful butterflies in the summer. These flowers come in beautiful shades of white, pink, blue, and purple. According to flower myths and traditions, aster signifies patience, variety, and delicacy.

- Sweet Pea. You can add sweet pea to your flower arrangement to give it a nice, sweet scent.

- Daisy. This summer flower denotes innocence, gentleness and purity. Sometimes called “the marker of summer”, the daisy is also called the “day’s eye” because it opens up and closes along with the sun. For a simple flower arrangement, simply get an empty milk bottle, fill it with water and put in a handful of these pretty blooms.

- Lily. The sensitizing effect of lilies will never fail to lighten your mood or bring a smile to your face so add them in your flower arrangement.

- Snapdragons. Snapdragons make beautiful cut flowers. They are great hung from a basket or kept in a tall, slim vase.

Make the best of summer by filling the spaces in your house, garden, and office with these summer blooms. They will not only beautify your room, they can lighten up your mood as well.

Flower Design and Fashion Trends

Submitted by J. E. Williams
Long a symbol of love and beauty, flowers have never gone out of style. Yet, some flower colors, varieties and designs are especially popular among more tasteful gift-givers and decorators. So, while the best advice may be to follow your own taste and sensibility, here’s what experts predict will be cutting edge this year for fashion conscious flower lovers everywhere.

Seasonal Statements

Summer looks bright, with flashy colors, especially greens, oranges and yellows, dominating the scene. Gerber daisies, sunflowers, lilies and a spectacular array of colored roses are the mainstay. Designs are casual, contemporary, dramatic, or even outrageous. Blazing tropicals are growing in popularity, too.

Fall color palettes will be more refined, with a variety of rich textures gaining in importance. Look for dried grasses and berries accenting mini callas, Leonidas roses, and Asiatic lilies. Color selections are graced by rust, bronze, amber or copper hues. Centerpieces will be natural yet elegant with deeper color accents.

Traditional red will dominate the Christmas season again this year, but watch for a greater variety of fresh evergreens, berries, roes and accents. Other popular color schemes include darker reds and crimson shades, as well as non-traditional palettes such as purple and turquoise. Textures will continue to play an important role, with flower arrangements featuring everything from pinecones and cedar to intricate handmade ornaments. Expect to see more glass bowls, cubes and vases of every size, especially in colors. With an emphasis on home and hearth, decorator cachepots and family heirloom containers will also play a part.

Spring will burst forth with a flurry of color and all the variety of an English garden. Tulips, iris, hyacinth, freesia, lisianthus, ranunculus and asters are just some of the season’s best. Fashionable designs may include simple clusters with just one type of bloom, compact nosegays with an abundance of varied blossoms and tall vased bouquets with stylish blooming branches. Traditional pastels will be back, with a decidedly feminine flair, but don’t be surprised by occasional accents in bright fashion colors.

Wedding Flowers

Simple. Elegant. Unique. Those three words are the key to planning a stylish wedding this year. While traditional tones and flowers are still popular, trends are moving toward bouquets with only one type of flower for a clean, contemporary look. Roses are particularly popular, with orchids, Calla lilies, cymbidiums and hydrangea making frequent appearances.

Colors are leaning toward monochromatic, for strong identity and style. Red and white are popular all year. Bright colors, like greens and oranges, will flow in the summer months. The Bohemian look, consisting of metals, browns, oranges and greens will emerge in the Fall. Combinations like “Khaki and Cream” are a good example of this Autumn vogue. Whites, creams, peaches and soft pinks remain, but bolder colors will come shining through. So, don’t be afraid to try something different, just remember to keep it simple, elegant and unique.

Flower Design Trends

From apple and lime to sage and celery, greens are definitely hot. Watch for cymbidiums, hydrangea, Kermit button poms, and roses in a variety of gorgeous green shades all year. In warmer months, look for hot pinks, bright oranges, and sunny yellows in the mix. In the cooler months, expect richer tones and deeper hues. The emphasis on design is texture and detail, with the best floral artists not only featuring unusual flower varieties but also other materials in their designs, such as grasses, berries, branches, and even metals. Design styles may vary from the streamlined elegance of just a few unusual blooms to the lush opulence of many different flowers combined, but regardless of style, it will be the small details and unusual accents that make all the difference this year.

Timeless Beauty

Flowers are timeless. Their popularity dates back ages. Yet, like anything else, flowers are subject to the ebb and flow of fashion trends. For the hottest colors, textures and design styles, keep an eye on your favorite decorating magazines, and clip a few of your favorite pictures. Then, consult your local florist. No matter what you have in mind, a professional florist can bring it to life. With an eye on design and a great florist partner, you’ll find it’s easy to make your floral gift-giving and home decorating more beautiful than ever and fashionably fresh all year.

Selecting the Right Wedding Flowers to Say Something Special

Planning a wedding is extremely stressful, but there are ways to make it more fun. It’s also important to understand that you can put a little more meaning behind your wedding as well. A little added touch by choosing the right wedding flowers can make all the difference.

While many brides look at color when they choose their wedding flowers, there are others that like to think about what their flowers really mean. Different flowers have different meanings, and it is a unique way that you can say something very special on your wedding day, just with the flowers that you choose.

For instance, if your focus is on true love, then say it with your wedding flowers. Obviously there are several different flowers that give off this meaning, so choosing the right one for your wedding will take a little time. While one choice will be more than enough, it doesn’t mean you have to stick with one. We tell many brides the more you choose, the deeper the feeling is about one another. Whether its pansies, red roses, forget-me-nots or baby’s breath, they all pertain to a love that is symbolic in more ways than one.

While love is the obvious feeling to express, there are many other choices available. For instance, if you want to express joy then Calendulas will be perfect. A little hope for the future could do well with irises, while goodness and beauty could be shown through zinneas, orchids, and calla lilies.

If you enjoy the look of scarlet zinneas they will portray a lasting love. However if you want to bring a meaning of affection that lasts forever, then we recommend the magenta zinneas. Loyalty can be shown through sunflowers, while not being able to live without your soon-to-be spouse can be expressed through primroses.

Often brides want to use flowers for good luck or for good things in the future. Bells of Ireland make a perfect choice, since they symbolize good luck. Orange blossoms are thought to bring about wisdom, and white violets deal with happiness.

We could go on and on, but you can see the plethora of options you have in front of you for your wedding day. When you take this approach, the conversations will fly and the meanings will surface. It’s hard to believe wedding flowers can do so much, even though most people believe they’re just for show. In the end, when you learn the meanings of each one, it will bring a new join to making your decision.

So on your wedding day, say something special with your wedding flowers. While many people won’t know what they mean, you can still use flowers for symbolism. Consider putting what the flowers stand for in the wedding bulletins so everyone is aware of the significance that comes along with the flowers that you have chosen.
