Cheap Wedding Flowers That Dazzle

Submitted by Kerry McCullough
Wedding flowers and decor are one of the easiest ways to save on your wedding without anyone noticing. The price of flowers these days- especially when you add the word “wedding”- can go through the roof in a blink. Once factoring in all centerpieces, bouquets, boutonnieres, ceremony arrangements, buffet table arrangements, pew pieces, and accents, you’re easily looking at $1,500. What if you could spend under $500 on your flowers, knowing it would still look fabulous?

Here are some do-it-yourself flower ideas that will help you save a lot of money on your wedding flowers:

Centerpiece: $10 each

2 stalks gladiolus
Gladioluses are beautiful, tall, majestic flowers that come in a variety of colors. They are about $4 per bunch (8 stalks) at your local grocery store. This will be able to cover 4 tables for $4 ($1 per table)!

3 Lemons
Cut the lemons into ¼ inch slices and then cut them in half (like half moons). Lemons are about 60 cents a piece.

Vase
Buy 8 inch tall, 3-4 inch diameter circular vases from a craft store or online discount store. You should be able to get these vases for $4 each.

Mirror
Buy circular mirrors from a craft store or online discount store. You should be able to get these for $1 each.

Rose Petals
Buy silk rose petals to sprinkle around the centerpiece from a craft store or online discount store. Think about whether you want to get yellow to accent the lemons or the color of the flowers. You should be able to get 500 silk petals for $8 (you will only need about 20 petals per table)

Directions
Buy the flowers no sooner than 2 days before the wedding. Assemble the centerpieces the day before the wedding. Each centerpiece will only take 5-10 minutes to put together. If you are covering 15 tables, you’re looking at 2 1/2 hours max for one person. Enlist the help of family and friends and get it done in an hour!

Snip the gladiolus stalks to the appropriate length for the centerpiece vase. Rubber band 2 gladiolus stalks together with a green rubber band (to match the stalk/ stem), so that the flowers are facing outward. Put them in the vase. Fill the vase around the flowers with lemons to hold the flowers in the center. Fill the vase with water. Put the centerpiece on top of the circular mirror, which will reflect the colors nicely and make the centerpiece appear to expand outward. Sprinkle the rose petals around the centerpiece.

If you have 15 tables, you’re looking at $150 total.

*If you have about $5 extra dollars per centerpiece, go ahead and add 3 votive candles in glass holders as accents around the centerpiece with the rose petals.

Ceremony and buffet table arrangements: $35 each

Buy large 24″ tall glass vases with footing (around $30 each online), fill each with 8 gladioluses (around $4 per arrangement). Gladioluses come with palm like grasses that you can use as an accent. Either wrap the palms around the perimeter of the vase horizontally or manipulate them so that they are sticking out with the gladioluses. With all of the palms from the centerpieces that you won’t be using, you’ll have plenty to work with. If you are using 2 ceremony arrangements and 2 buffet table pieces, you’re looking at around $140.

Bridesmaid Bouquets: $18 each (max)

3 camellias, 3 daisies, 6 cornflowers, palms from gladiolus as accents (can bend them over to be upside down tear drop shapes). Wrap in florist tape and ribbon. One person hold the bouquet together, the other person wrap in tape and ribbon.

You can add a few flowers to the maid of honor’s bouquet to make it stand out or make her flowers a different color.

*Both of these flowers are available in some color in each season- not always available in all colors. These are cheap but beautiful types of flowers.

Have a bridesmaid luncheon the day before the wedding and include bouquet making/ centerpiece assembly. Each bridesmaid will assemble her own bouquet while you are assembling your bridal bouquet (with help from a couple other people). It may sound like you’re asking for a chore from them, but it’s actually quite fun– I did this for my own wedding.

Total time: 30-45 minutes per bouquet

If you have 4 bridesmaids, you’re looking at about $75 total.

Bridal Bouquet: $35 (max)

3 large lilies (or other favorite flower), 5 camellias, 8 cornflowers, palms and/or other greenery for accents. Similar assembly as above. Don’t forget to cut the stamen out of the lilies- they will stain your dress!

You will most likely have to buy a bouquet of lilies- you probably won’t be able to just get 2 stems. Use the rest of these lilies to accent your cake and buffet table.

Boutonnieres: $5 each
Wrap a camellia and accent foliage (can be a piece of palm from gladiolus) in green florist tape and push a straight pin through it. Wiring may or may not be necessary, depending on sturdiness.

Suggestions For Making Arrangements of Flowers For the Special Day

Submitted by Connor R Sullivan
When choosing flowers for a grand occasion such as a wedding, it is important to consider that the floral arrangements should reflect the spirit of the bride’s special day. From decorations to bouquets and table arrangements, many brides don’t have the idea as to which of those to select. It is important to choose flowers considering the preference of the bride and groom, place of reception, color of the bride’s dress and if there is any existing theme. Fresh flowers can be ordered at flower shops which specialize in making wedding table centerpieces, bouquets, posies, and other types of flower arrangements.

However, the most important point to consider before ordering flowers is the season in which the wedding is going to be held. Most of the varieties in flowers can be found all year long, but seasonal flowers can be easily obtained and at a much cheaper price. Fresh flowers are quite a reasonable choice for planning wedding day arrangements. However, a few brides may also choose to have arrangements made of artificial flowers and dried flowers for table centerpieces. An overall aspect of the different flowers available during the different seasons may help to plan the arrangements in budget and at the same time allow having the most suitable flowers for the wedding.

Flower arrangements for the wedding need certain things to be acknowledged. The first and the foremost thing is the color. There are a number of books available online that can be of help in choosing the best kind of arrangement. It depends on the individual’s interest whether to make the arrangements large or small or colorful. A delicate look can be obtained by using orchids which is sure to take away everyone’s breath with its loveliness and sheer elegance. It is always important to consider the location where the arrangements are going to be placed so that they are set apart from the ordinary ones.

Furthermore, during the fall, wedding arrangements can both comprise of foliage and flowers as it gives a pleasant and warm feel while creating a tasteful ambience. Elaborate flower arrangements not only is cost effective, but also add elegance to the overall decoration on the special day. The flower bouquet of the bridesmaid can be matched with the color of the dress. A good option is to have the bridesmaid wear light pink color dress while the bride wears traditional white. This way the flowers for the bouquet can be chosen in shades of pink and white.

Moreover, the main flowers can consist of roses, lilies, carnations and rosebuds together with lily of the valley and ivy which will make an ideal background for the main flowers. An elegant and sophisticated look can be achieved by a teardrop shaped bouquet handheld by the bride. For the bridesmaid, a round formal posy with greens, net or lace as distinctive trimmings would be ideal. To achieve a harmonious and warm look, both the brides and bridesmaids bouquets should be complemented with the same colors.
Connor R. Sullivan finds it simpler to get a floral arrangements ordered online for his wife and mother. He finds it simpler to purchase flowers from online flower shops for all his gift needs.

How to Create Spectacular Arrangements With Dried Flowers

Submitted by Jennifer P Miller
There nothing more eye-catching than a gorgeous flower arrangement in the home! They can create a welcoming feeling for guests, provide cheerfulness or relaxation, and are great compliments to any decor. They can either be purchased pre-arranged or can be handmade using your favorite types of silk or dried flowers. If you’re like many of us and are on a budget, it’s a more cost-effective choice to make the arrangement yourself. This way, you’re sure to find sales on the materials and aren’t paying for someone else to do the arranging for you!

Life Imitates Art

One neat trick to making a dramatic statement in a room is to purchase a painting (or use and existing one) and re-create the scene in the picture. For example, a silver bowl filled with pears in a painting can inspire you to find a silver dish at a rummage sale or thrift store and then buy some faux pears at the craft store when they are on sale. You can probably make something like this for under $20 whereas, if you had purchased it pre-arranged, it could cost $100 or more at an upscale design accessory or craft store.

You can do the same scene mimicking with flower arrangements. Find (or use an existing) picture or painting to springboard the type of dried flowers and colors you’ll be using in your project. Even if you don’t have a picture of a flower arrangement, use any existing framed work of art and locate 3 or 4 main colors and begin there. For example, a café scene in a frame could inspire you to pick up the red in the awning, the orange in the outside bistro tables, and the brown in the jars of coffee beans inside the shop window. You can really play around with your arrangements and make the picture come to life with your arrangements! Use the tallest stalks in the center for height and then add shorter ones around the outer perimeter. If you’re using silk plants, gently bend them so they appear more like the real thing.

Ah, the Aroma of Fragrant Dried Flowers

Fragrance is one of the great advantages to using dried plants and flowers. Buy dried flowers in bulk for the best deals, for example, buy bunches instead of stalks, and you’ll save more money. Dried lavender, chamomile, China tea, eucalyptus, or roses can be bought by the bunch and have fragrances that can’t be beat! You can also buy just the dried buds of the flowers and make dishes filled with combination’s of fragrant flowers, pine cones, dried wood shavings, or tiny gourds, and sprinkle them with potpourri spray or essential oils so they can bring a pleasant aroma to any room they are in.

Budgets are Welcome

If you’re working on an especially tight budget, online coupons and specials can be found easily along with weekly specials in the paper or from your mailbox. You don’t have to look very hard to find special discounts and deals these days! You can definitely make numerous arrangements for your home with very little investment. Any of these great ideas also make super gifts to give for any occasion. Try making one for your mom, sister, or a friend and see how touched they are when they see the beautiful arrangement you’ve created just for them!

How to Make Your Own Flower Arrangement

Submitted by Timothy Spencer
On their own, flowers are beautiful and colorful enough to pick up the mood in any room, but just think of how everything will look ten times more incredible if you arrange your flowers cleverly. There are no hard and fast rules to flower arranging, but there are a couple of guidelines and measures you might want to consider if you want to create a striking flower arrangement worth airtime on a Martha Steward episode.

Consider the size and space where you intend to place your arrangement, as well as the shape of your container and the number of flowers you intend to use. For instance, if your flower arrangement will be placed on the dining table, your flower arrangement should be no more than nine inches high; otherwise your guests will have difficult making conversation across the table.

If you want to put your arrangement on a living room side table, a large vase with a spray of flowers will look overcrowded and out of place; use a small vase and lesser flowers instead. You may also want to use green, water-retaining foams for your fresh cut flowers as these absorb water better than the brown foam used for artificial flowers.

To make a visually pleasing arrangement, use flowers in different stages of development, from tiny buds to open blooms. Put the buds and the smallest flowers at the edges and the top of the arrangement, and the full blooms at the middle or in front of the arrangement. The full blooms are the focal point of the design, whereas the buds work as the accent. Flowers in half-bloom can be placed anywhere between the two.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colors, shapes, and textures. Generally speaking, there are three shapes of flowers. Line materials are straight leaves like iris leaves and flowers like lilies, and are used to form the outline of your arrangement. Round flowers like open roses, carnations, and daisies usually make the focal point. Intermediate or filler flowers or small foliage are placed between the other flowers and fill in the design.

Finally, forget the rules and let your instincts take over. The great thing about arranging flowers is that it doesn’t take years and years of training to make them look stunning; after all, flowers are already beautiful things on their own. Pay attention and let your eyes be the judge – you don’t need to be an expert to know which flowers look best next to each other.
