Japanese Decorating Uses Flowers

Submitted by Andrew Caxton
Japanese flower arranging or ikebana, is rapidly becoming more and more popular all over the world. Flower arranging is an art form, and doesn’t just take the arrangement of flowers into account, but the entire structure, such as vase, placement and form. In the west, we merely place the flowers in a vase, and strive for a balanced look, but Japanese flower arranging is structured along lines that represent the important elements of life: heaven, earth, humans.

These three representational symbols are found in many expressions of Eastern culture and Japanese flower arranging is one of the prettiest forms. Each of the components, such as the stem, the leaf or the flower is viewed as representing a symbol of this holistic view, and the vase also becomes an important component.
Ikebana is an ancient art that probably began in Buddhist temples in Japan in the sixth century as a form of offering. The flowers and branches of a plant would be placed in such a way as to point to the heavens, illustrating the faith of the person making the offering.

Original ikebana flower arrangements were simple and almost crude in their design, but through the centuries the art was improved upon and became more sophisticated. A new form of the art of flower arranging, called rikka, emerged in the fifteenth century and become the precursor of the stylized flower arranging practiced in Japan still today.
“Rikka” seeks to capture the wonders of nature in a single flower arrangement. Flowers are placed in such a way that they represent a mythical mountain called Mount Sumeru that is a symbol of our universe, and each piece in a rikka arrangement is a part of that universe. For example, white chrysanthemums represent water and pine branches represent stone. Although these exact representations are no longer respected, in prior times rikka was used extensively in ceremonial decorating.

In the late nineteenth century, another form of ikebana became popular in Japan and carried over to Western cultures. This is called moribana and in it the garden artist seeks to create a garden world in miniature. Terrariums and bonsai were popular outgrowths of this art form in the west.

Though Japanese flower arranging is very popular in modern society, it has ancient roots that it are important to remember. You may see beautiful Japanese style flower arrangements in both formal decorating schemes as well as casual arrangements in a stylish home.

Tips on Making Beautiful Floral Arrangements

Submitted by Sandy Beaches
Do you have your own flower garden and would like to make some use of it? Are you fond of crafts and do it your self decorative projects? Would you like to make some homemade floral arrangements to further accent your home or to give away as gifts? If this sounds like you, then please read
on for some tips on making beautiful floral arrangements.

To start your floral arrangements, you will first need something to put your flowers in. Get a
vase or some other container that is decorative and also holds water. Before you start your floral
arrangements, you may want to consider further decorating the vase or container by spraying it
with gold or bronze spray paint. Let it dry for 24 hours and then spray on a coat of clear enamel
spray. This will give your arrangement a more decorative feel.

Next, you need a base for your floral arrangements. The base is used for the flowers to have
something to anchor to. You can use a ball of willow branches, grapevine, or floral foam that you can
buy at a local craft store. The floral foam is called Oasis. If you use Oasis, be sure to soak
it in water and poke holes in it with a pen before you put flowers it so that it doesn’t break the
stems.

When cutting flowers for floral arrangements, try to do so early in the day or morning. This is
because the stems have more water in them at this point of the day and the flowers are not
drooping. Be sure to only use cold water in the flower arrangement because warm water tends to make the
flowers open up too soon and not last as long.

If you want your flowers to last longer, you can places apple and lemon wedges in the water at the
bottom of the floral arrangements. The apples have nutrients that will help feed the flowers,
while the lemons prevent premature rotting and browning. It also adds a more decorative touch to your
flower arrangements.

When designing your flower arrangements, try to pick colors that go with the environment the
arrangement will be placed in. First use taller flowers to create the vertical part of the
arrangement. Then use full blooming flowers with bright and bold colors for the center and sides of the
floral arrangements. Then fill in the small gaps with tiny flowers.

Those were some great tips on making beautiful floral arrangements. If you use all of these tips
in conjunction with each other, you are sure to have a long lasting floral arrangement. With a
little practice, you can be well on your way to having beautiful floral arrangements that rival
those found in floral shops!

Getting married in November, any floral arrangement ideas?

Submitted by lemon juice
We live in Texas and the garden we’re renting for the event looks just BEAUTIFUL in November. I booked it not thinking about the limited fall floral selection.

Our wedding party colors haven’t been decided because I’m not sure what selection of boquets we’ll have. Once we’ve found an arrangement – or even a flower… we’ll have a better grasp of color. Everything’s at a stand-still until then.

Has anyone seen any pretty November florals?
Or do you know of a website where I can browse flowers by season & state?

Protect your Flower Arrangements from Viruses

Bacteria and viruses can attack fresh cut flowers as they would attack any one of us. Mixed flowers in a vase pass viruses to each other. Just like we pass viruses or the flu to each other.

Leaves from the flower that are touching water will rut. Vases that do not have their water changed on a regular basis will have a slimy substance around the stem of the flower. That slimy substance is a bacteria that will not let the flower breath. All this because the flower shop was not careful selecting healthy flowers for your arrangement.

Do not keep fruits and vegetables close to your fresh flowers. Most fruits and vegetables produce gases that are very harmful to flowers, and make them wilt and die faster. To prevent any of these things from happening, change the vase water as frequently as you can (once a day is great, once every three days is the longest you wait to change your flowers water). If you take a little time to take care of your flowers, your flowers will last much longer.

Many years ago I bought beautiful Christmas flowers that I brought to my house and I left next to a bowl of fruit in my kitchen (What a big mistake that was!). While I was looking for a place to put my new flower arrangement. I left it next to the bowl fruit for no more than half hour. Well the very next day my beautiful Christmas flowers were ruin. I was so upset I just spent hundred fifty bucks on these flowers and now they were ruin! I didn’t understand what happen. So I went down to my local florist and I told them what happen. After me explaining the whole story to them, they told me the fruit gave the flowers a bacteria that killed them. They were very nice and they understood my anger. They even replace my flower arrangement.

This is how you avoid having your flowers killed by a virus. Wash the vase with some bleach. Bleach kills any bacteria that are clinging to the vase. Add acids to the water right away. A table spoon of lemon juice or vinegar, couple a drops of Listerine will keep the water fresh and bacteria free. Your flower will last much longer.

Talk with your local florist about any concerns you may have with your flowers. A Florist is very knowledgeable about flowers and that can really help you avoid making big mistakes with your flower arrangements. Ask around with all the local florist in my city I ask the same questions to three or four florist.
