With all the special occasions spring brings, think flowers, dried that is. Many choices wait. So begin with the selection of the Tilandsia in green, as center of interest along with preserved Lasiantha leaves in dark green placed in a large crystal goblet to which assorted moss stones have been added in the bottom. Keeping in the cool shades of green, add basil Stone beans & preserved frosted Eucalyptus in olive, to bring height to the arrangement. For a finished touch add a basil colored raffia bow. Welcome to Part Two of how to Decorate your wedding. Part One gave you ideas for invitations, name plates and placemats. In this issue, we’ll deal with flower arrangements. Flower arrangements do not stop at placement around the room, or the ones the bride and bridesmaids will carry – but they are for the centerpiece on the tables, over archways, doors, by the bathrooms, the wedding arch, etc . . .

No matter how unattractive a room is, you can transform it with decorations from the flower arrangements. You want to choose arrangements that will fit the size of your room. If you have a big room, make the flower arrangements big and wide, for a narrower, smaller room, make them taller. This will bring the focus up, instead of out. Wide arrangements will take the focus out, around the room.

For strong color, interesting texture, and a wonderful fragrance, use fruit with your flowers, to create an impressive centerpiece. Think of grapes, citrus fruits, or apples tucked into flowers, or gilded and silver pears piled high for a winter celebration.

For a delicate, airy centerpiece for your reception tables, place an orchid plant in a footed urn or glass container in the center of the table. Cover the soil with green moss or river rocks. Or you can use several small vases arranged in the center of each table, filled with their very own flower, that makes a beautiful, natural-looking bouquet. Offer them as a keepsake to each guest at the end of the reception.

Flowers can be an expensive part of a wedding. Don’t let your need and want for beauty break the bank. You don’t have to buy your flowers from a flower shop. Look in your friend’s gardens, roadside flower peddlers, etc… A florist will be happy to answer your questions of which flowers are in season, she may even have a list. Don’t be shy to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to use inexpensive blooms for arrangements. When they are all placed together, they can make an impression that will strike anyone’s fancy. Less is more – Sometimes the smallest bouquets can make the biggest impact. You may also want to consider working with just a few basic colors – or if it’s easier on the budget, do a hodgepodge of complimentary colors. You may also want to think about doing fewer, but more extraordinary arrangements. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of greenery, such as ivy, and texture-rich ferns. To make the bride and groom feel special, decorate the back of their chairs with flowers, greenery and ribbons, or swags. Make sure to select blooms that will not stain their clothing. Fresh flowers are not the only flowers that you can use to make a beautiful flower arrangement. You can make a flower arrangement out of dried flowers, too. Contrary to most people’s opinion, dried flowers can still be used for so many purposes like in making flower arrangements.

There are many ways to dry fresh flowers. You can freeze-dry them, air-dry them by hanging them upside down, use silica gel, or place them in the microwave – just be sure to follow instructions on how to do these things carefully.

When arranging dried flowers, place a vase on a lazy Susan with the base of the vase stuck with floral clay and a piece of foam fixed into the vase. Using lepidium, lavender and a straw, provide an over-all shape to your arrangement. Then, fill center up with flax, foliage, galax leaves, or maidenhair fern. Position your flowers in descending order of size where large flowers such as hydrangea are the ones placed first, then moving on to the medium-sized ones. Do not forget to space them evenly. For a better effect, add delphinium, larkspur, or dried flax.

When making a bouquet of dried flowers, it helps to imagine a triangular floral arrangement with a flat back. Make an arrangement that is 1 1/2 times bigger than the size of the vase. Begin by placing twigs, ferns, spike flowers, and long seed heads. To show depth, longer pieces such as larkspur should be used at the back of the arrangement.

To finish it up, add filling material such as statice, tansy, or hortensia, extending at least half the height of the twigs and ferns. For greater appeal, the most attractive flowers with the main colors of the arrangement should be located at the center.

Make sure that the arrangement is balanced well–not too heavy on one side. And to maintain the arrangement’s basic shape, keep filling it up with flowers and heighten its effect with seed heads and grasses.

Since many of us love to craft, I have an idea. Take several strands of the natural raffia (length of choice); make a knot at the top end. Attach at random by gluing or tying, natural dried fruits such as apple slices, grapefruit slices, & orange slices, including cinnamon sticks tied on with small raffia bows at each one of the fruit slices. Brew –up a cup of tea or apple cider, pop-in a cinnamon stick, stir gently, wake –up the taste buds, as well as the sinuses. Another simpler option would be to gather-up the yummy fruit slices, including the whole split orange, place in a crystal bowl. Stir often & enjoy.

Dried flowers have been used decoratively since prehistoric times. Early Japanese art used pressed flowers and leaves to create scenes of landscapes and gardens. Pressing flowers flat while drying them, however, seems to have become popular in Western culture during the Renaissance (14th-17thcenturies). This was a time of rebirth for the arts and the sciences, and botany, the study of plants, became a popular hobby. Plant classifications were developed and soon even amateurs were pressing and cataloging the herbs and flowers in their gardens. The Victorians, of course, raised it to an artform.

Today, pressed flowers can be beautiful natural decorations for notecards, greeting cards, scrapbook pages and other crafts. Yes, you can buy a commercial flower press, if you think you are going to get into pressing in a big way. For the rest of us who want to press flowers occasionally, there is this simple “home-made” version method.

Pick several delicate flowers at the peak of their bloom, as well as some leaves.Lay a piece of blotting paper on top of several sheets of newspaper on a flat surface. (For very succulent flowers, use more newspaper to absorb the moisture).Place the flowers and leaves on the blotting paper without overlapping them.Cover them with another sheet of blotting paper and several more sheets of newspaper.Place heavy books, phone books, or a bowling ball on top.Let sit for 3-4 weeks in a cool, dry place. Check the flowers every few days for the first week, and once a week after that. With tweezers, carefully peel the flowers from the blotting paper and reposition them to prevent them from adhering. Replace the newspapers at the same time.After four weeks, the flowers should be stiff and dry and the paper should feel dry. If not, leave them for another week.Now, your dried, pressed flowers are ready to embellish greeting and note cards, scrapbook pages, or other crafts. Use tweezers to handle and position them on your surface. When you like your arrangement, glue them down with white glue using a small paintbrush, being sure to glue all edges. As they dry, press them under a piece of wax paper and a heavy book for a day to prevent curling. You can protect your final work with a spray of clear polyurethane, a coat of decoupage medium, or laminating.
