The Steps to Making a Unique, Themed, Floral Arrangement

Submitted by D. Damore
Floral arrangements are the perfect addition to any kind of setting or theme.  They are the one thing that can add a personal touch to all your plans.  The most important thing about floral arrangements is that there are no hard and fast rules for making a unique, themed arrangement.   Generally the only things that need to be considered before jumping in are how much you can spend, where you are going to use the arrangement and what flowers you like best.  Once those points are clearly established in your mind, you can allow your imagination to run wild.  Here are 5 steps to help you shape your plans.

Choose the theme

The most important aspect in making a unique, themed arrangement is to choose your theme.  Will it be a general theme such as a wedding, birthday party or baby shower or will it be a more specific one like a butterfly wedding, a cowgirl birthday party or a rainbow baby shower?

Choose the flowers and colors

Once the theme is firmly established, begin to choose the flowers and the colors to go with your theme.  If Christmas is your theme, you might choose to use red, white and green for colors and you could choose carnations, poinsettias or roses for your flowers.  A butterfly wedding theme would sparkle if you chose pastel, spring colors and flowers that are light and delicate.

Choose the Flower Base

What will you put your flowers in when you begin making a unique, themed arrangement?   The base that you choose is just as important as the flowers you choose.  It will depend on the size of the flowers, the size of the arrangement, the mood you wish to create, the shape of the arrangement and where it will be placed.

If you have a large, perhaps bulky type of arrangement a small, delicate vase just wouldn´t work.  You would choose a rather large, firm sitting base that wouldn´t turn over when the table was bumped.  Whether it is small, short, large, tall, colored, clear, fancy, plain, delicate or firm will depend on the theme you have chosen and the type of flowers you will use.

Choose the Accessories

Accessories are the non-flower items you add when you make a unique, themed arrangement.  Things like candles, mirrors, ribbons and bows make amazing accessories and can dress up the floral arrangement by giving it that extra touch.  A special accessory for a Christmas centerpiece could be a miniature sleigh with the flowers inside and tinsel or bells.  Pine cones and gold or silver ribbons or bows are excellent accessories for a Christmas theme.

Choose to Personalize

Once again your imagination is the limit.  Choose a personal photo and ask your florist to include it in the arrangement.  Don´t be afraid to use items with sentimental value like your great aunt´s lace from her wedding gown or a card with an intimate message.  When you make a unique, themed arrangement, personalization is the crowning touch.
